Despite their sulphurous temperaments, the four former prisoners were forced to accept Kimimaro's authority after a while, mainly because he had mastered them all in combat, but also because his unusual kekkei genkai made him Orochimaru's future host. By managing to escape unscathed, all four proved their worth to the Sannin, who decided to make them his bodyguards. Like all other prisoners, they were forced to fight against each other in organized battles to ensure their survival. In the anime, the members of the Oto Quartet were basically prisoners of Orochimaru.
